How to Connect Claude to Stock Data via MCP

Connect Claude to real-time and historical stock market data using an MCP server. Step-by-step instructions, example prompts, and troubleshooting tips.

mcpclaudestock data

This guide shows you how to connect Claude to the FinancialData.Net MCP server. Once connected, Claude can retrieve stock prices, financial statements, ETF data, insider transactions, institutional holdings, and more. It uses the same endpoints described in the API documentation.

How it works

FinancialData.Net exposes its entire REST API through a single remote MCP server. Every documented endpoint is mapped to a tool, and the naming follows a predictable pattern:

API endpointMCP tool
stock-symbolsgetStockSymbols
income-statementsgetIncomeStatements
etf-pricesgetEtfPrices

If an endpoint exists in the docs, Claude has a tool for it. Claude picks the right tool for your question, sends the request, and shows you the result in the chat. You don't need to write any code.

You → Claude → MCP tool call → financialdata.net/mcp → JSON → Claude → answer

Prerequisites

  1. A FinancialData.Net API key. Create an account at FinancialData.Net and copy your key from the dashboard.
  2. An eligible plan. MCP access is available on the Professional and Enterprise plans. Other plans cannot use the MCP server, though the REST API still works.

Step 1: Build your server URL

The MCP server URL is:

https://financialdata.net/mcp?key=API_KEY

Replace API_KEY with your actual key.

Step 2: Add the connector in Claude

Claude's interface changes from time to time, so the exact labels may differ slightly from what you see. The steps below stay the same.

  1. Open Customize in Claude. In some versions of the app, this menu is called Settings.
  2. Go to Connectors. This page lists the connectors you already have and lets you add new ones.
  3. Click Add custom connector. Depending on your layout, it may be a button, a + icon, or an option in an "Add" menu.
  4. Fill in the details:
    • Name:FinancialData (this is just a label, so you can use any name)
    • URL: the server URL from Step 1
  5. Leave the OAuth credentials empty. Your API key is already in the URL, so you don't need them.
  6. Click Add.

If you can't find the Connectors page, search for "connectors" in the menu. You can also follow Anthropic's custom connector guide, which is updated whenever the interface changes.

Claude Code (CLI)

If you prefer working in the terminal, add the server with this command:

claude mcp add --transport http financialdata "https://financialdata.net/mcp?key=API_KEY"

Verify it with:

claude mcp list

Step 3: Enable the connector in the chat

Make sure the connector is turned on for your conversation. In the chat, click the + button, select Connectors, and switch FinancialData on. You can turn it off the same way when you don't need it.

Step 4: Verify the connection

Send this prompt:

List the available tools from the FinancialData server.

A working connection returns tool names such as getStockPrices, getIncomeStatements, getEtfPrices, and getStockSymbols. If Claude says it has no such tools, go to the Troubleshooting section.

Then run a real query:

Get the last 30 days of end-of-day prices for NVDA and tell me the highest close.

When Claude calls a tool, the interface typically shows the call and asks for permission the first time. Approve it, and optionally choose to always allow it for this connector.

What you can ask

Claude can use several tools in a single answer, so you can combine different types of data in one prompt. Here are some examples that work well:

Historical Valuation

Assess whether Eli Lilly is undervalued by comparing its current P/E ratio to its five-year historical average.

Profitability Comparison

Compare the net income growth and profit margins of AAPL and MSFT for the current fiscal year.

Alpha Analysis

Check NVIDIA's trailing twelve-month performance against the S&P 500 and calculate the alpha generated.

Insider activity

Show insider transactions for AVGO over the last 90 days and summarize net buying vs. selling.

Screening-style workflows

Pull balance sheets for the last four fiscal years of JPM, BAC, and WFC and compare their debt-to-equity trends in a table.

For best results, name the ticker, the data type, and the time range. Ask Claude to show which tools it called if you want to audit the data path.

Data coverage

The MCP server mirrors the REST API, so coverage matches the documentation. Categories include:

  • US & international stocks, ETFs, OTC securities, cryptocurrencies, forex, and indices
  • End-of-day and intraday (minute) prices, plus real-time quotes
  • Income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements
  • Key metrics, valuation, profitability, liquidity, solvency, and efficiency ratios
  • Earnings releases, dividends, splits, and IPO calendars
  • Insider transactions, institutional holdings, and short interest
  • Executive compensation, ESG data, and press releases

Troubleshooting

Claude doesn't list any FinancialData tools Confirm the connector is toggled on for the current chat (Step 3). Start a new conversation after adding or editing a connector.

Authentication errors

  • Check that API_KEY was replaced with your real key and that there are no spaces or line breaks in the URL.
  • Confirm your plan is Professional or Enterprise. MCP access is restricted on other plans.
  • Confirm the key is active in your dashboard.

Wrong or stale data in an answer Ask Claude to show the tool calls it made and the parameters it used. If it answered without calling a tool, tell it explicitly: "Use the FinancialData tools to get this."

FAQ

Does this work with clients other than Claude? Yes. The server is a standard remote MCP server, so any MCP-compatible client (Cursor, ChatGPT, custom agents) can use the same URL.

Do I need to install anything locally? No. It is a hosted remote MCP server. A local stdio server is not required.

Is the data real-time? Availability depends on the endpoint. Real-time quote endpoints and intraday minute prices exist alongside end-of-day history. Check the documentation for each endpoint.

Which tool does Claude call for a given question? Claude chooses automatically from the tool schemas. You can also name the tool directly, for example: "Use getIncomeStatements for AMZN."
